An-Nashitat (Removing Gently) النَّاشِطَات

In review — pending scholar verification

The second oath of Surah An-Naziʿat (79:2) — interpreted by classical commentators as angels who remove the souls of believers gently.

Overview

An-Nāshiṭāt (Arabic: النَّاشِطَات) is the second oath in the opening of Surah An-Nāziʿāt (79:2): "And [by] those who remove with ease." Classical commentators (al-Ṭabarī, Ibn Kathīr, al-Qurṭubī) interpret this as angels who remove the souls of believers gently — the merciful counterpart to the violent extraction of disbelievers' souls in 79:1. The verb nashaṭa conveys ease and brisk gentleness.

Quranic references

  • Surah An-Nāziʿāt 79:1–5 — the five oaths of the surah.
  • Surah As-Sajdah 32:11 — "The angel of death will take you, who has been entrusted with you."

Hadith

Al-Barāʾ ibn ʿĀzib reported the Prophet ﷺ described the believer's death: "His soul flows out as easily as water flows from a flask." — Sunan Abi Dawud 4753 (graded Sahih by al-Albani)
