Signs of Allah (Ayat) آيَات اللَّه

In review — pending scholar verification

The "signs" by which Allah is recognised — encompassing the verses of the Quran, the cosmos and natural world, the events of history, and the unfolding of human life.

Overview

Āyāt Allāh (Arabic: آيَات اللَّه; "Signs of Allah") is a foundational Quranic term — at once the verses (āyāt) of the Quran and the signs by which Allah is recognised across all of reality. The Quran uses the word in four overlapping senses:

  1. The verses of the Quran themselves — Surah Al-Baqarah 2:106; each ayah is a "sign".
  2. The cosmos — heavens, earth, day, night, mountains, sea (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:164; Yunus 10:101).
  3. The natural world — animals, plants, rain, the human embryo (Surah Al-Mu'minun 23:12–14; Ar-Rum 30:20–25).
  4. Historical events — the destruction of the disbelievers of past nations as "signs for those who reflect" (Surah Al-Aʿrāf 7:84; Hud 11).

  • Surah Ar-Rum 30:20–25 — extended sequence of "and of His signs..."
