In review — pending scholar verification

The mountain north of Medina — site of the Battle of Uhud (3 AH / 625 CE), the second major engagement between Muslims and Quraysh; described by the Prophet ﷺ as "a mountain that loves us and we love it."

Overview

Jabal Uḥud (Arabic: جَبَلُ أُحُد) is a mountain just north of Medina. It is the site of the Battle of Uhud (3 AH / 625 CE) — the second major engagement between the Muslims and Quraysh — and is mentioned in authentic hadith with unique love by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ: "Uhud is a mountain that loves us and we love it" (Sahih al-Bukhari 4422; Sahih Muslim 1393).

The Battle of Uhud (3 AH)

About a year after Badr, Quraysh marched on Medina with about 3,000 men under Abū Sufyān. The Muslims (about 700 after some hypocrites withdrew) met them at Uhud. Initial Muslim success turned to disaster when archers placed by the Prophet ﷺ on a hill abandoned their position to gather spoils; Khālid ibn al-Walīd (then with Quraysh) flanked the Muslims; the Prophet ﷺ was wounded; the Muslim Companion Ḥamzah ibn ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib (the Prophet's ﷺ uncle) and 70 others were martyred. Surah Aal Imran 3:121–180 was revealed to address the spiritual lessons of the battle.
