Tafseer تفسير

In review — pending scholar verification

The classical scholarly discipline of explaining and interpreting the meaning of the Quran.

Overview

Tafseer (تفسير) is the science of explaining the meanings of the Quran — its vocabulary, grammar, occasions of revelation, abrogated and abrogating verses, and its application in law and creed. Distinguished from ta'wil (interpretation of intent), tafseer in its classical sense seeks to convey what Allah intended by His speech, grounded first in the Quran itself, then in the Sunnah, then in the understanding of the Companions and their students.

Etymology

The word derives from the root ف س ر, meaning to uncover, expose, or make clear. The form tafsir is an emphatic verbal noun — a thorough unveiling. The opposite, ibham, denotes ambiguity. Scholars classify tafseer into tafsir bi'l-ma'thur (transmitted exegesis, relying on hadith and reports from the early generations) and tafsir bi'l-ra'y (reasoned exegesis, disciplined by Arabic linguistics and sound principles).

Quranic references

The Quran itself describes its clarifying role and instructs the believer to reflect on its verses:

  • Surah Sad 38:29 — 'A blessed Book which We have revealed to you that they might reflect upon its verses and that those of understanding would be reminded.'
  • Surah An-Nahl 16:44 — 'And We revealed to you the message that you may make clear to the people what was sent down to them.'
  • Surah Muhammad 47:24 — 'Then do they not reflect upon the Quran, or are there locks upon their hearts?'
  • Surah Al-Qiyamah 75:19 — 'Then upon Us is its clarification.'
كِتَابٌ أَنزَلْنَاهُ إِلَيْكَ مُبَارَكٌ لِّيَدَّبَّرُوا آيَاتِهِ

Hadith and tradition

The Prophet ﷺ was himself the first mufassir, explaining verses to his Companions and warning against speaking about the Quran without knowledge:

The Prophet ﷺ said: "Whoever speaks about the Quran by his own opinion, let him take his seat in the Fire." Jami at-Tirmidhi 2950 (Hasan, graded by al-Albani)
Ibn Abbas reported: The Prophet ﷺ supplicated for me, saying: "O Allah, give him deep understanding of the religion and teach him interpretation." Sahih al-Bukhari 143

Ibn Abbas became the foremost exegete among the Companions; his students — Mujahid, Sa'id ibn Jubayr, Ikrimah, and Tawus — transmitted his explanations to the next generation.

Significance

Tafseer is the indispensable bridge between the divine text and the believing community. Without it, terms such as tawhid, iman, akhirah, and taqwa remain mere lexemes; with it, they become a coherent worldview. Foundational works include Jami al-Bayan of al-Tabari, Tafsir Ibn Kathir, the Jami li-Ahkam al-Quran of al-Qurtubi, and the Tafsir al-Jalalayn. Modern reference works such as Ma'arif al-Quran continue this transmitted tradition.
